Understanding the Drainage Funnel
1 September 2023
What is the drainage funnel? I'm going to break it down in this blog! Take a look at this visual…and let’s get started!
Addressing and opening up your detox drainage funnel should be at the top of your list, especially if you’re struggling with chronic issues or are planning to do a detox or parasite protocol in the near future. I wanted to create a comprehensive blog that explains each layer of the drainage funnel, so you understand just how important it is!
When you’re trying to address your personal root causes, it’s essential that your detox drainage pathways (funnel) are open and will allow the elimination of toxins from the body.
Drainage is foundational, so if you, for example, become constipated or have trouble sweating, it’s important to fix these things before continuing on with any other protocol!
If the bottom of the drainage funnel is blocked, nothing above that blockage can drain. That means toxins are getting backed up and re-circulating in your body, making you feel many common detox symptoms.
When all areas of this drainage funnel work properly, you will experience fewer detox symptoms and your body will thank you. Now let’s learn HOW to open up detox pathways one step at a time.

Level 1 of the Drainage Funnel: Colon
The colon is at the bottom of the funnel, and the most important. It’s VERY important to approach each level of the funnel in order so things don’t back up more.
How often are you pooping? You should have 1-3 healthy bowel movements every day.
If you aren't having 1-3 healthy bowel movements per day, there are likely underlying issues that need to be addressed. In the meantime, here are tips for getting things moving:
Level 2 of the drainage funnel: LIVER and BILE DUCTS
The liver and gut are directly connected, so having a healthy liver will help your gut, and vice versa. Once your bowels start moving, your liver will be able to function better.
Our liver is involved in over 500 vital functions. It’s incredibly important for helping your body filter and remove toxins, but we’re being exposed to WAY more toxins than our livers were made for, and they are under a LOT of stress. We need to support our liver on a daily basis, and here are a few ways to do that and make sure level 2 of the drainage funnel is happy:
Liver 3 of the drainage funnel: LYMPH
This is the simplest system to open up and the most underrated, in my opinion. The lymphatic system carries cellular debris and waste out of the body and is similar to the circulatory system in that it has vessels but does not have its own pump. For this reason, WE have to move our lymph. We need to move our bodies. Period.
Remember that stagnation allows toxic byproducts to build up, and this can brew dis-ease. Lymph fluid surrounds the organs, so we want this fluid to be as free of toxins as possible. My favorite ways to move lymph are:
Level 4 of the drainage funnel: SKIN & ORGANS
The skin is our largest detox organ, and we can use this to our advantage and lessen the toxic burden on the body by sweating! Sweating is important for detoxification and keeps your rain barrel from filling up! There are SOO many benefits to daily sweating! I recommend investing in an infrared sauna. It’s been one of the most impactful and beneficial tools I’ve used 3-5 times a week for 15 years. You can read more about infrared saunas here.
If you struggle to sweat, travel up the drainage funnel and address your LYMPH first! Dry brushing, massage, using a shake plate, or exercising before jumping in your sauna can work wonders to open things up!
You may also be dehydrated. Even if you’re drinking enough, if you’re lacking minerals, you’re cells may not be holding enough water to sweat out.
Also, note that not all sweat is created equal. For instance, sweat from exercise pulls out different toxins than sweat from a sauna session. Infrared saunas also pull out more toxins than a standard sauna. See my blog about the benefits of using an infrared sauna here. Healthy options to induce sweating include:
Level 5 of the drainage funnel: CELLS
It’s easy to forget about the smallest and last level of the drainage funnel, but cells literally make up the entire body and are the absolute root of everything. Our cells fuel all bodily processes and provide energy and molecules necessary for growth, repair, and function.
Cellular detoxification is crucial for eliminating toxins and harmful waste products and preventing their accumulation to prevent potential damage. My tips for supporting cellular health include:
Phew! I know that was a lot, but I hope I connected some dots for you and inspired you to work on opening up your drainage pathways. This alone can help you to feel SO much better. Follow this up with a detox and a parasite protocol, and you are unstoppable!
