How to Poop and the Importance of Pooping
15 September 2023
This blog is going to be all about how important it is to POOP! And how to help you start pooping every day!
We’ll be diving into why it’s important to poop, what’s stopping you from pooping, how to improve your pooping in order to detoxify, reduce symptoms, and to feel your best!
As you know, I am obsessed with helping you get to the ROOT of your symptoms, and I’m here to tell you that getting to the root is MUCH easier and you’ll start to feel better faster if you’re pooping.
Pooping every day is going to improve your gut health, which has a compounding effect on the rest of your body, especially your liver, brain, and energy!
With a healthy gut, we can start absorbing nutrients to fuel our bodies, and reduce stress on the liver for better detoxing, digesting, and cleansing of the body.
So let’s take a deep dive into all things poop, and get you started on track to optimizing your health and feeling amazing!

Firstly, why is constipation stopping you from feeling your best?
Did you know that if you aren’t pooping 2-3 TIMES A DAY, you are considered constipated!
Our poop carries hormones, toxins, plastics, heavy metals, and general waste products out of the body. Without regular bowel movements, those toxins are reabsorbed and recirculated into our body, making us feel sick and putting extra stress on our detox organs.
You can think of our detox organs as one large funnel with your colon at the bottom (see image below - and learn more about the drainage funnel here). If our bowels aren’t moving, it backs up toxins into our liver, blood, lymph, and other organs and tissues, making our body more toxic.
Before you start detoxing, parasite cleansing, or mobilizing toxins, I highly recommend getting your bowels moving so you’re benefiting from all the hard work your body is doing to move those toxins out!
Before we dive into HOW to get your bowels moving, let’s look at some potential root causes of constipation.
There are many potential causes, but here are a few...
As an Integrative Health Practitioner focusing on the root cause approach, I have found that even just addressing the above causes can make HUGE improvements in a person's health.
Keep reading to find out how exactly to address the most common causes of constipation which will get you pooping more regularly, and on track to feeling amazing!
Here are 7 helpful tips to get the bowels moving
I recommend getting half of your body weight in ounces of water per day, but this will increase if you sweat a lot, live at high altitudes, do coffee enemas, etc.
Do you drink water but pee frequently? You may not have enough minerals to absorb the water into your cells. Without minerals, water goes right through us and doesn’t hydrate our bodies as it should.
2. Support digestion! Here are several tips to support your digestive organs... this is just a start...
3. Utilize Supplements that support the liver and gut
The gut and liver are directly connected and if you have a stagnant or backed up liver, it can reduce bile flow and cause digestive issues in the gut. Here are some of my favorite supplements and tools to support both gut and liver health!
I could talk about the liver all day, but I’ll save that for another blog! Liver health is essential for a health gut. Here’s a blog I wrote on how to support your liver and live a detoxing lifestyle. It’s a great place to get started!
4. Addressing Parasites, and bacterial/yeast overgrowth
Parasites and overgrowths are a VERY big deal! I recommend parasite cleansing to everyone, and normally after a parasite cleanse, they move onto a protocol aimed at getting rid of overgrowths.
These are two HUGE root causes that are not only adding to bowel issues, but pretty much everything else as well! Having problems with sleep? Energy? Thyroid? Hormone balance? Mood? YUP, parasites and overgrowths can be at the root of all of those!
Gut health is about balance. It’s about creating an environment in your body where the good outweighs the bad.
Do you have a history of antibiotic use, stress, birth control use, or poor diet? Have you done a lot of vomiting in your life?
Many things can disrupt the healthy balance of bacteria and yeast in our gut.
If you’re interested in parasite cleansing (my #1 recommendation to improve the health of your gut and digestion), you can read all about it here and the parasite cleanse I recommend and have extensive experience with!
5. Move Your Body
Stagnation brews disease, and lack of movement can have a serious impact on the motility of your bowels.
If you aren’t active, start out by walking 10-15 minutes a day, then build up and try to shoot for 8000-10,000 steps a day.
You can also try rebounding on a trampoline, vibration boards, yoga, stretching, and running — they can all improve bowel motility.
6. Lower your stress to help improve your gut motility and reduce constipation.
Stress is a BIG deal and we're all under a LOT more of it than we think. Not just the normal financial, work, relationship, stress, but we're under 100's of layers of both internal and external stress. Check out my list here of all the unknown stressors you're likely dealing with and how to start chipping away at them.
Stress is at the root of most issues, and it’s one of the most important onions you need to peel back before you can start living the life you want! Learn more about how you can do that here!
7. Look at your diet
Diet is huge when it comes to bowel movements. Look at how you can improve upon your diet, but don't change it too quickly. Then start increasing fiber slowly. I have a blog what to remove from your diet if you don't know where to start. This is a GREAT place to find the biggest game changers when it comes to your diet and what will help you improve your health fast, not just your bowels!
